Colorado Nurses has requested comments from you regarding HB24-1066
Our important Prevent Workplace Violence in Health-Care Settings legislation passed in the House Health and Human Services with a bi-partisan vote of 12-1.
It’s now critical that the full House of Representatives understand how important this legislation is to assure a safe workplace for all health care workers. We need you to write in your own voice of your concern for working in a safe environment and for support when violence occurs. Please send your comments now.
We nurses are the first responders or victims of many threatening incidents. Here are the key elements of the bill. Health care facilities will:
- Establish a violence prevention program to document and review workplace violence events. The committee will create a workplace violence prevention plan and update the plan as appropriate.
- Train their workers on the plan and on workplace violence prevention.
- Submit annual reports to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment or the Behavioral Health division that document incidents of workplace violence to support the study of contributing factors to incidents of vilence.
- Provide support services to victims of workplace violence.
- Allow workers in health care facilities the choice to notify law enforcement of incidents without discouragement.
This is a common sense bill to provide basic violence prevention when we know that health care facilities are high-stress environments in which altercations can easily occur. It’s time to step up and take practical steps to address the issue.
